A young pastor, while leading a congregation, ran into a problem. 

During a Friday evening worship service, an argument broke out among the church members. 

During the prayer, half of the congregation stood while the other half sat. 

And both sides claimed that they were in the right, maintaining that they upheld the church tradition. 

No matter how hard the pastor tried to mediate, he could not bring both sides together.

Not able to solve this problem, the young pastor decided to pay a visit to one of the founding members of a church, a 99-year old man, at the nursing home. 

​

The pastor told the old man the problem that he was having within the church.

“Is it this church’s tradition to stand during prayer?”

“No.”

“Then, sitting is the tradition.”

“No, sitting also isn’t the church tradition.”

“If neither is the church tradition, then what is?  During prayer, about half of the congregation stands, shouting at those who are sitting, while the other half sits, jeering at those who are standing.  Which is the tradition?”

“Pastor, what you just described is our tradition.  During prayer, we have always fought!”  

한 젊은 목사가 회중을 이끌던 중 문제에 부딪혔습니다.

금요일 저녁 예배 중에 교인들 사이에서 논쟁이 일어났습니다.

기도하는 동안 회중의 절반은 서 있었고 나머지 절반은 앉아 있었습니다.

그리고 양측 모두 자신들이 옳았다고 주장하며 교회 전통을 유지했다고 주장했습니다.

목사님이 아무리 중재하려고 해도 양측을 하나로 모을 수 없었습니다.

이 문제를 해결하지 못한 젊은 목사는 요양원에서 교회 창립 멤버 중 한 명인 99세 남성을 방문하기로 결정했습니다.

​

목사님은 교회 안에서 겪고 있는 문제를 노인에게 이야기했습니다.

"기도 중에 서 있는 것이 이 교회의 전통인가요?"

"아니요."

"그러면 앉는 것이 전통입니다."

"아니요, 앉는 것도 교회 전통이 아닙니다."

"교회 전통이 둘 다 아니라면 무엇일까요? 기도하는 동안 회중의 절반 정도가 서서 앉아 있는 사람들에게 소리치고, 나머지 절반은 앉아 서 있는 사람들을 비웃고 있습니다. 어떤 전통이 있을까요?"

"목사님, 방금 말씀하신 것은 우리의 전통입니다. 기도하는 동안 우리는 항상 싸웠습니다!"
